Chimney Sweeping

Your chimney should be inspected and possibly repaired at least once a year. With a litany of things that could go wrong if your chimney backs up, it is better to be safe than sorry. You may already know how important it is for your chimney to receive regular check ups, but do you know how the sweeps are performed?

The “Level 1” safety inspection comes first. These inspections are mandated by the National Fire Protection Association and on a very general level include the following:

  • Checking for flammables in the vicinity of the fireplace
  • Ensuring that all the ventilation components of the fireplace are working properly
  • Ensuring that the external structure of the chimney is stable and in good shape

Cleaning ChimneyOnce this is completed and everything looks fine, it is time to get to work. The first thing you’ll see us do is remove any furniture in the surrounding area of the mantle or fireplace. We just want to keep your nice things away from any of the equipment we’ll be bringing in to get the job done.

We will then put down a drop cloth over the hearth and surrounding flooring to keep any particles of debris from the chimney itself from reaching the aforementioned floors. We’ll also be running a Shop Vac at the same time, right into the firebox itself. This works to further ensure that what’s being knocked loose in the chimney is not going anywhere outside of the fireplace.

Once suction is set, it is then time to break out the sweeping rods themselves and get to work on the inside of the chimney.

After the sweep is complete, we’ll use the Shop Vac to clear out any chunks of creosote that were knocked loose onto the smoke shelf during our cleaning. Then it’s onto the firebox where we remove any remaining debris as we sweep the internal wall of the firebox. After that it’s as simple as removing the drop cloth, returning your furniture to where it belongs, and leaving you to enjoy your sparkling new fireplace!

Chimney Relining

Did you know your chimney has a liner? A liner is an extremely important safety measure against noxious fumes coming into your home. When the liner begins to break down, you run the risk of nasty things like carbon monoxide getting into your house.

Family Sitting In Front of FireplaceThere are generally two different types of liners used in most chimneys. In more modern builds you’ll see the liner consisting of a cylindrical piece of thin, flexible stainless steel or aluminum. Sometimes we’ll still come across older chimneys that use ceramic tiles to act as a liner.

These ceramic tile builds are far more prone to breaking down, and when they do, the falling tiles can cause a clog in the chimney. A scenario like this could lead to large amounts of dangerous gases leaching into the home - something you definitely want to avoid!

Replacing these ceramic tiles also runs on the expensive side seeing how the chimney has already been constructed. It could also just lead to the tiles failing and clogging the flue once again. The metal liners are simply much easier to work with and much, much better at performing their job!

Don't fret - give us a call today and we can help you take care of all your chimney needs!
